The pink ribbon is an international symbol of breast cancer awareness, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Originally the ribbon was actually peach and its original concept, developed by breast cancer sufferer Charlotte Hayley, was to attach the ribbon to cards; she handed out at supermarkets, to bring awareness of the fact; The National Cancer Institute's annual budget of 1.8 billion US dollars, had only 5 percent going to cancer prevention. Haley evoked much interest and although her peach ribbon could not be used for legal reasons, the ribbon changed to pink and became a universal symbol of Breast Cancer awareness and is most commonly seen during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Pink Ribbon Foundation, is a trust which awards grants to provide financial support to UK charities, which relieve the needs of people who are suffering from, have been affected by, or who work to advance the understanding of breast cancer and its early detection and treatment.
They provide financial support to over 150 charities, many of which are very small and have to operate on very limited financial resources and helps them provide programmes of care, complimentary therapies, counselling for patients and their families, up-date communication materials, awareness programmes, lymphedema care, therapy sessions, specialist equipment extra nurses to care for breast cancer patients and vital research.
